The Governors of Bellenden Primary School
Bellenden Primary School is supported by a Governing Body of Thirteen people. We come from all walks of life and bring many different skills and experiences to the role. What unites us is a desire to see the best for the school of which we are all very proud.
We passionately believe that our children must have the very best education we can offer so they eventually leave school with some real choices to make about their future jobs, careers, further education and life style.
All parents are welcome to come along and listen to what goes on at a Governing Body meeting.
Who we are

I became a school governor at Pilgrim’s Way in 2014. I have worked for over a decade in the not for profit and public sectors in campaigning, policy and strategy including for one of the world’s leading children’s charity. I became a governor because I believe that a good education is crucial to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to fulfil their potential. It’s great to have the opportunity to support a school in my local area and I hope I can further support the development of Pilgrim’s Way.
Local Authority Governors – appointed by the London Borough of Southwark
Juliette has been a Local Authority governor at Pilgrims’ Way since October 2003. An early career in marketing and sales was followed by many years working for two of the UK’s largest children’s charities, which support some of the most vulnerable children and families in the UK. She currently runs her own small business.

I became a school Governor as I believe that the quality of education which children have influences their future life choices. It is both a privilege and a pleasure to have the opportunity to help progress the high standards at this happy school”
From the first time I visited Pilgrims’ Way it has been obvious that Gregory and his team are trying to do something exceptional for the local community, and I was therefore delighted to be asked to become a governor in 2014. I spend a lot of time advising company boards and investors on how best to use their limited resources, and my role as a governor is to use this experience to assist the school leadership make the right decisions so that they can continue to help every child fulfil their potential
Fay Copeland – Co-opted
My name is Fay Copeland, I live in Greenwich and I have been a school governor at Pilgrim’s Way since September 2015. I have been a lawyer for 15 years and am presently studying for a Masters degree in Leadership & Strategy at London Business School. I love reading and music and I am learning to play the piano. Whilst at my last firm, I helped set up a reading programme with the head teacher, inviting groups of children from Pilgrims’ Way to come and read with the staff of Wedlake Bell. I became a school governor because I believe that every child deserves a good education and as a governor I can help children in the community to get the very best from their time at school.
Parent Governors – elected by the parents of pupils attending the school
I am currently working in retail and undertaking a degree in Travel and Tourism Management. My children are currently pupils at Pilgrims Way I became a governor simply because I have always had an interest in children’s education and their wellbeing. I have thought of being a governor before but never had the opportunity to pursue it until the school approached me and encouraged me to take on the role.
I believe that a school and the staff should provide a safe and engaging environment, as well as able to cater for all the individual needs of each pupil. I look forward to being a part of that and seeing happy children who are keen to learn.
Gregory Doey, Executive Headteacher
Alex Turnbull, SEN
I have been teaching since 1993 and I am committed to ensuring that all children in our school are supported in order to help them achieve their full potential. My present post at Pilgrims’ Way, which I have held since 2010, involves managing inclusion. This entails working with all school staff to ensure all children have equal access to the curriculum regardless of their special educational needs and physical disabilities; this also includes children who do not have English as their first language. My role as teacher governor enables me to represent the needs of these groups when the school is making strategic decisions during meetings with the governing body.

What we do
Governors work as a team, in the best interests of the children and the school, to raise educational standards and ensure everyone within the school community is safe. The Headteacher is part of the team.
- – are accountable for the performance of the school to parents and the wider community
- – plan the school’s future direction
- – select the Headteacher
- – make decisions on the school’s budget and staffing
- – make sure the national curriculum is taught and set the Statutory Attainment Target (SATS)
- – agree policies about the way the Governing Body and the school work
- – decide how the school can encourage pupil’s spiritual, moral and social development
- – make sure the school provides for all its pupils, including those with special needs
- – monitor the outcomes of pupils to ensure wherever possible they achieve their academic, personal and social best
- – support and challenge the Headteacher by gathering views, asking questions and deciding what’s best for the school.
How we work
The Governing Body meets formally at least twice a term.
Governors perform their role by:
- – Attending meetings
- – Receiving written briefings, reports and presentations from the Headteacher and his colleagues
- – Discussing and debating key issues and data
- – Visiting the school, including undertaking a specific role as a link governor
- – Meeting with parents and staff – both informally and formally
- – Undertaking regular training course pertinent to Effective Governance
Feedback from/to Parents
Each year we formally report to parents through the school profile which is in a standard national format issued by the Department for Education.
Additionally, each summer we hold an Annual Review where parents and Governors have the opportunity to discuss the school. Governors also attend the Parent consultation days held in the autumn and spring terms each year.
We are always keen to hear the view of parents – please feel able to tell us what you think at any time.
